Here’s an example of how provocation and challenge combined with a learning mindset can quickly transform events and outcomes.
Colin: “What would you like to work on today?”
Client: “Taking things personally. When I experience tough challenges I take things personally, I don’t know why, feels like I am failing and it is hard to take. I don’t show this, but it hits me on the inside. In a few days I’m up before an executive committee and I know I’m in for a tough time, they are going to hammer me because we have not met expectations, and I know it’s going to get ugly.”
For 30 minutes I poked and prodded, using provocation and challenge with this senior level client in one of the largest corporations in the world. He was up against it, and needed to shift things quickly. At the end, he’d made a decision, to adopt a completely different mindset when approaching this key event.
The result…
Client: “The call I had today on the topic we discussed last Friday went extremely well, after I applied the learning principle. So well in fact that they want me to present this in on a weekly call. They said “…having someone who is able to give a thorough view of the situation with the transparency we need, was missed from the beginning. Thanks for this…”
Without this intervention, that call would have been very different indeed. Happy client, happier stakeholders!
Small changes to attitude and mindset can easily transform one’s reality.
