Breaking the Habit of Labelling Bad Things

August 21, 2023 by Colin Gautrey

Bad things happen. Life throws its curveballs. However, what if the way we’ve been programmed to react to these “bad” events is in fact, counterproductive?

Often, our immediate response to adversity is to label it as “bad” or “unfavourable.” It’s a natural reflex – an ingrained behaviour that we’ve been conditioned to display over time. But is this instinctual reaction the best approach? More importantly, is it even accurate?

Let’s be real. By marking something as ‘bad’, we unknowingly throw ourselves into a self-inflicted whirlwind of negativity. This doesn’t just stop at our emotional reaction. We tend to ruminate, wallow, and soon, our entire perspective is clouded by this self-declared ‘misfortune’. Like a magnet, we start attracting and focusing on more negativity, thus building a fortress of stress, worry, and pessimism around us.

Ironically, while it may be a commonplace response, it’s utterly fruitless. By succumbing to this mode of thinking, we relinquish control, allowing external circumstances to dictate our internal state. We grant these events the power to shape our narratives. Instead of being proactive, we find ourselves stuck, playing the perennial victim.

But here’s the game-changer: What if we could swap out this detrimental habit with a more empowering one? Imagine, instead of defaulting to the “woe is me” attitude, we shifted our perspective to see each challenge as a mere hiccup or inconvenience, rather than a dead-end.

To do this, first, question the notion of “bad.” What makes an event objectively bad? Often, the distinction between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ isn’t black and white; it’s created by our interpretations and perspectives. So, why not opt for a more constructive view?

Suppose you start treating every challenging situation as a catalyst, an opportunity for growth or change. In this scenario, every setback isn’t an endpoint but rather the beginning of something potentially transformative. By adopting this perspective, you place yourself back in the driver’s seat. You’re no longer at the mercy of events; instead, you take charge, deciding how you’ll interpret and respond to them.

Remember, history is peppered with countless stories of individuals who have faced hardships, only to use them as stepping stones to incredible achievements. From losing jobs to battling health issues, many have flipped the script, transforming these ‘misfortunes’ into opportunities. Their secret? A simple decision to see things differently.

In essence, it boils down to a choice. A choice that each of us holds within our grasp. You can choose to remain in the confines of your negativity-laden comfort zone, or you can decide to break free, reframe your narrative, and march forward with unwavering determination.

It’s high time we all broke this detrimental habit of labelling events as ‘bad’. Instead, let’s regard them as opportunities in disguise, waiting for us to unveil their true potential. The next time life throws you a curveball, catch it with grace, and remember, it’s not the event but your reaction to it that truly defines the outcome.
