The Gautrey Influence Blog: Inspiring Action and Success Since 2008

Interrupting Your Emotional Reaction

July 9, 2021 by Colin Gautrey

We discussed the need to become clear about what you wish to change, and then various ideas on how to do this. For confidentiality, the snippets below only contain my ideas, but contributions from clients included:

  • Breathing, in 4, hold 4, out 4. Alternatively, in 3, hold 4 and out 7. Basically, find a way to pause and focus on even breathing for a while.
  • Stepping out, and distracting yourself in some way.
  • Searching for the positive intent.
  • Pause to think, “Does it matter?”
  • Draft the email but don’t send it.

The final part I proposed a new process called Restoring the Logic that was well received, and one client this week reported significant improvement by using the process (many times!).

The Goal

Interruption
