Being on the receiving end of political activity at work is quite emotive.
Feelings evoked include:
Frustration : Anger : Fear
Generally, people feel stuck and impotent. Unable to find an effective response. Worried about getting it wrong. In quiet moments, clients admit feeling embarrassed or that they've been taken advantage of.
Most people then find a way of accepting it. Chalking it up to experience, "it's just very political round here." Many claim "I don't do politics" and then shuffle off to live another day.
Only a few seize this as an opportunity to learn. To explore and take steps to turn the negative into a positive. Utilising these situations for good.
These are the people who I believe are mastering the politics. Getting comfortable with their surroundings, and the people, and the games. Not so they can take advantage, but so they can do their work and make the most of every ounce of effort they put into it.
Now, after nearly 15 years helping people to master the politics, I am creating an online course. A short programme of learning to give people confidence, and capability. To help honest people find a way to handle political situations, and do it well.
You don't have to put up with the politics, now you can master the politics, for the good of all!
Speak soon, Colin
Creator of Mastering the Politics
"My purpose, and my passion, is to help you to take positive, high-integrity action to become more influential."
This course is designed to be completed over a 12 week period and comprises a number of modules, with video tutorials, exercises and case studies, all aiming at helping you to master the politics.
The modules address the Six Pillars of Political Mastery:
- Motives: Exploring the complex web of hopes and fears among the key players around you and your work.
- Contexts: Nobody works in isolation, so understanding how political agendas interact is vital work in mastering the bigger picture.
- Strategies: How are people furthering their cause or agenda? This needs to be visible to you before attempting to engage with the politics.
- Conclusions: Taking the heat out of the moment, and looking at the logic behind all of the action allows you to see what is really going on.
- Decisions: Learning how to take political decisions is life/career saving. Weighing up the consequences and predicting the outcomes is the art of politics.
- Actions: Once the decision is made, implementation needs to be fast, before things change again.
The modules will be designed to address these areas in total, plus seven core characteristics vital to survive and thrive in political environments, with your integrity intact.
- Each module includes videos, readings and exercises.
- This is a self-study course.
- Although you set the pace, it is recommended that you aim to complete this course within 4 months.
- Along with the course, you'll also get access to over 500 practical articles and resources about influence.
Now, it is over to you, to make today the first day that you begin to master the politics!
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to complete the course within a certain time frame?
No, although we recommend that you get on with it as soon as possible and complete it within four months. You've got access guaranteed for a full year so the only pressure is really about when you want to get the result!
How many PDUs does this qualify for?
Due to the diverse range of people we work with, this course is not aligned to any particular institute or organisation. Therefore, you will need to liaise with your own institution and follow their guidance.
How many hours will I need to devote to this?
Modules will be released every two weeks. The actual time you spend will vary depending on the degree to which you apply yourself to the exercises and follow-up work. Aim to spend at least 2 hours a week working on this. Mind you, you do not have to go that fast and you can spread the work out over a longer time frame if you wish.
Will you issue a completion certificate?
Yes we will, however you will need to send in all of the completed exercises. This does not mean they will be assessed in any way, just that you have completed them.
If I send in my exercises, will you look at them and give feedback?
Quite likely we will. Much depends on our workload, so please don't assume we will. That said, we are all keen to maximise the value and results you get from this, so we will do our level best to reply and give feedback as much as possible.
What if I want to take a break?
No problem. We guarantee to keep the materials available to you for a complete year. In practice, we are not currently closing off any access. If you have any special requests, just ask and we will make it happen. This is designed to run at your pace. We only release them slowly at first to force a little digestion time so you don't go too quickly!
What happens if I get really stuck?
Our purpose is to make this work for you so if you get stuck, reach out to us. Either myself or one of the team will help get you moving again. So, just email the team and we will help.
Are you offering any guarantees?
Yes. I am very confident that if you apply yourself to the learning, complete the exercises, and apply these approaches to your situation, you will get the intended results. In this case, developing your political capability. And if you don't, I will personally connect with you and see what needs to happen so that you do. You can read more about the terms of this elsewhere on this page.
