Personal Branding: Why Your Three Words Matter

March 17, 2025 by Colin Gautrey

Your reputation precedes you. People are already making assumptions about who you are, what you stand for, and whether they should trust you—before you even open your mouth. That’s why personal branding isn’t optional. It’s happening whether you like it or not.

The most successful professionals don’t leave this to chance. They take control and shape how they are perceived. One of the simplest and most powerful ways to do this? Define your three personal brand words.

The Power of Three Words

Think of some of the most powerful personal brands today:

  • Elon Musk – Innovative, Disruptive, Unfiltered
  • Taylor Swift – Creative, Strategic, Relatable
  • Novak Djokovic – Relentless, Disciplined, Resilient

Each name evokes a specific impression. The moment you hear it, you feel something about them. Their reputation is clear, strong, and consistent.

Yours can be too.

You Already Have a Brand

Whether intentional or not, people around you already have an opinion. Colleagues, bosses, clients—they talk about you, describe you, recommend you (or don’t). The question is, are you actively shaping that narrative or letting it happen by default?

Your three words are your anchor. They clarify the impression you want to make and help guide your behaviour, decisions, and communication.

Define Your Three Words

Start by asking:

  • How do I want to be perceived?
  • What qualities set me apart?
  • What do I want to be known for in my industry or role?

Examples:

  • Strategic, Decisive, Trusted
  • Creative, Energetic, Precise
  • Calm, Analytical, Assertive

Choose words that reflect both your aspirations and your strengths. Then, reality-check them.

Reality Check: Do People See You This Way?

Ask a few trusted colleagues: “If you had to describe me in three words, what would they be?”

If their answers don’t match yours, you’ve got work to do. The goal is to align perception with intention.

Start making deliberate moves to reinforce your three words:

  • In meetings, emails, presentations.
  • In the way you manage relationships.
  • In the standards you uphold.

Over time, your brand becomes not just how you see yourself—but how others see you too.

Final Thought

Your three words aren’t just an exercise—they’re a daily decision. You choose to wear them, live them, and prove them.

You’re always making an impression. Now’s the time to own it.

So, what are your three words? And what are you doing today to make them real?
