Private Insights on Influence

Rolling with the Punches

Rolling with the punches means coping with adversity through flexibility.

Years ago, I sought feedback from a client after training his global team.

He noted those I’d coached showed maturity and gravitas, outshining untrained peers who seemed naïve amid office challenges. ‘They’re able to roll with the punches,’ he said.

This challenges you: Are you appearing immature to key stakeholders?

Consider these behaviours:

Overreacting to political games with emotion.

Moaning about ‘how things should be’ to others.

Whining to your boss about a colleague’s actions.

Indulging in idle gossip, especially about rivals.

Avoiding disliked colleagues altogether.

Manipulating situations for your gain.

Lying by omission or dodging tough questions.

Holding grudges against past outmanoeuvres.

Be honest – your actions shape perceptions higher up.

Reflect: Which habits might undermine your influence
