They Must Be Mad… No, You’re Just Naive

April 11, 2025 by Colin Gautrey

Why Political Moves Don’t Make Sense — Until You Start Connecting the Dots

You’ve seen it.

A political decision that defies logic.

A leader saying one thing and doing the opposite.

A government prioritising something no one asked for, while ignoring what matters most.

It’s easy to shake your head and say:

“They must be mad.”

“How can anyone be this incompetent?”

“What on earth are they playing at?”

But here’s the uncomfortable truth:

They’re not mad. You’re just naive.

Not stupid. Not incapable.

Just operating under a false assumption:

That what you’re seeing is the whole picture.

Because when you start connecting the dots behind the scenes, it all starts to make uncomfortable sense.

Why You Feel So Baffled

Most people assume political decisions should be logical.

That policies should serve the people.

That outcomes should follow promises.

That leaders should act in the nation’s best interest.

But that assumption is the first mistake.

When you judge a move by your values, but it’s driven by someone else’s interests… it won’t make sense.

You’ll feel off-balance. Angry. Disillusioned.

You might even start to doubt your instincts.

“Surely they wouldn’t do that… unless there’s something I’m not seeing?”

You’re right.

There is something you’re not seeing.

How Hidden Agendas Work

Hidden agendas aren’t always evil. But they are always personal.

They might be driven by:

  • Self-preservation
  • Party loyalty
  • Poll numbers
  • Funding sources
  • Career ambition
  • Damage control
  • Foreign relationships
  • Media optics
  • Or a need to distract from something else entirely

The point is — you’re not meant to see it.

What looks like incompetence is often a well-rehearsed performance.

What feels like chaos may be a deliberate fog.

And when you feel confused or triggered — it’s often working exactly as intended.

So How Do You Start Connecting the Dots?

You don’t need to become cynical.

You need to become observant.

Here are five ways to shift from confusion to clarity:

1. Watch What They Do — Not What They Say

Ignore the soundbites. Look at decisions, timings, and outcomes.

That’s where the real agenda hides.

2. Ask: “Who Benefits?”

Every move has a winner.

Ask: who gains power, money, protection, or influence from this?

Follow that thread.

3. Pay Attention to Timing

What’s being launched, delayed, or rushed — and why now?

Is it a distraction? A cover? A test balloon?

The calendar matters more than the content.

4. Spot the Contradictions

If a leader claims one thing, but their actions repeatedly show another — you’ve found the real message.

Truth leaves a trail. So do lies.

5. Stay Curious, Not Enraged

Emotion is useful, but manipulation feeds off it.

Stay calm, sceptical, and alert — that’s how you stay in control.

The Real Power Comes From Awareness

Most people feel powerless in the face of political games.

But you don’t have to be.

You can choose to observe, decode, and question.

To stop reacting — and start seeing.

The more you understand how agendas operate, the harder it is for others to play you.
