Exercise: What Power Do You Need?

For this exercise on developing your power, take a piece of paper and create the table below with the columns shown. As you complete the exercise, note down what comes to mind. One of the reasons why this is useful is that, as you go about your week, more ideas will come to mind. Then when you review your exercise at a later date, you can continue to build a greater understanding of the group you wish to influence.

  1. What groups do you wish to increase your influence with? (your team, marketing, directors, etc.)
  2. For each group, note down the top three classes of power that you think they respond to. What do they value by way of skills and assets? What moves them to do things differently? (Use the table power sources as a guide, but don’t be ruled by it; if you’ve got a better idea, use it.)

  1. What differences do you notice between what you are currently paying attention to about yourself, and what each group recognises and is influenced by?
  2. What opportunities are there for making more of what you’ve already got?
