Leaving an Impression

From the statements you developed in the last article (if you didn’t I would strongly advise you do this now, click here), it is now necessary to simplify them so that you can return your focus to getting the work done. These statements will continue to sit behind everything that you do however, you don’t need to keep these at the forefront of your mind — merely review on a regular basis.

What is more important now is that you find a way to keep the essence of them in your mind as often as possible. To do this, I want you to:

  1. Reflect on what thoughts you’d like to enter the minds of important people in your organisation when they think of you.
  2. Imagine three words you’d most like them to have in their mind when thinking of you.
  3. Now turn these into exciting words that fit with your desired reputation.

If you are not a natural wordsmith, make use of the examples in the reading section to stimulate your creativity. The most important part of this is getting some words which will excite you. These are not to be shared with others, just used in the privacy of your own mind and motivations.The last point is the most important. First time around on this exercise, most people come up with words like professional, trusted, reliable, knowledgeable etc. These are not the kind of words which will make you distinctive. Everyone wants to be trusted (well most people do). Few people are thought of as crisis managers, troubleshooters, vivacious or charming. If others think words like this when you’ve left the room, or even better, before you’ve entered the room, you’ll be standing out as distinctive.
