Ten Years! Seven of the Best

May 10, 2022 by Colin Gautrey

This week marks the tenth anniversary of my blog, which I find hard to believe. Harder still is to note that in those ten years I’ve published nigh on 1,000 articles and 500 videos, all focused on helping people to succeed with greater impact and influence.

To mark the occasion I’ve pulled out the seven articles I most frequently refer to in my private coaching work and for the time being, have made these public so you can read, enjoy and hopefully, benefit too. Read More

Funambulism for Life

May 3, 2022 by Colin Gautrey

Setting your vision for a new life or career is mission critical and often quite hard to do. Yet, even when the vision is clear, actually making substantial progress is somewhat tricky, often because people lack the skills of mental and emotional funambulism - or tightrope walking. I've found this in my own life and career. Get an exciting vision, get all revved up and taking action, yet somehow, the old life, the old way of being, keeps you anchored to yesterday. Read More

Oomph

April 26, 2022 by Colin Gautrey

Oomph is an interesting word.

To me, it means people have something about them, some special quality that gets them noticed, that creates a huge impact.

They have energy, dynamism, determination to get done what they need to get done.

They have that definiteness, a purpose that they really know what they're driving for, and they're willing to back everything, to put everything on achieving that objective.  Read More

Observing Influence

April 19, 2022 by Colin Gautrey

Difficult skills to master require a decent amount of investment - of time, energy, blood, sweat and tears. Influence is just one of those that requires a big investment on many of these fronts.

While you can learn a great deal from books and articles, nothing quite works as well as learning through observation. However, passive observation is slow and of variable quality.

When it comes to learning influence through observation, some questions will help give you structure and speed up the process.

Attitude

April 12, 2022 by Colin Gautrey

Be very careful with the attitude you adopt when you go into action. Attitude begets behaviour at the subtlest of levels.

If you hold a negative attitude, no matter how much you attempt to cover it up, it will show through, if only at a subconscious level.

People will pick up on it. Even if they cannot put their finger on it, they will know something is wrong. But, what?

Since you are hiding how you re really thinking and feeling from them, they will most likely guess what is the matter rather than asking you point blank. Read More

Positive Politics

April 5, 2022 by Colin Gautrey

If you’re like most people, you will tend to shy away from conflict and things you don’t like.

When you don’t like the politics, you’ll sky away from that too.

And that my friend, is a big problem - especially if you want to make progress with other people, because it is all about the politics. Read More

The Bigger Picture Mindset

March 29, 2022 by Colin Gautrey

Far too many people are rooted to their own position, their own job, their own immediate vicinity when they're thinking about the world.

Rightly so, because they've got a job to do. They've got to focus in on what they need to deliver satisfaction to their immediate stakeholders.

Yet this is missing a major opportunity to step up to a higher level of thinking. Read More

Trust: A Fickle Beast

March 22, 2022 by Colin Gautrey

Trust is a tricky yet vital element to all relationships. Good levels of trust are required for them to function well. Trust is not a black or white, yes or no, type of concept. And, if you want it in good order, it pays to know what it is, what it is not, and how it emerges and develops within relationships. Then you can make it real in your relationships far more easily, and take appropriate action to maximise it. Trouble is, can you pin it down? Can you quantify it? Do you realise just how fickle this beast is? Here are seven factors to consider that will challenge even the most experienced:- Read More

Perspectives

March 15, 2022 by Colin Gautrey

The common exhortations:

“Walk a mile in his moccasins.”

“Seek first to understand.”

“You cannot solve a problem with the same mind that created it.”

All point to the vital need to consider alternative perspectives when approaching difficult situations, people or problems. And for most people, this present a major problem. Read More
