As an executive, it's easy to become disconnected from your colleagues.

However, the risks of isolation are significant and can have devastating consequences. Isolated executives risk making poor decisions, undermining trust with their team, and ultimately failing.

To avoid these dangers, executives must actively seek diverse perspectives, be open to feedback, and foster a culture of collaboration within their team.

Executive Isolation – The Risks of Disconnection

April 10, 2023 by Colin Gautrey

Isolation is a problem for many executives, but it's especially damaging when they become disconnected from their executive colleagues.
When this happens, leaders risk making decisions based on personal biases or interests, rather than what's best for the organisation.
This lack of collaboration can also create a toxic work environment that stifles innovation and damages morale.
That's why it's critical for executives to foster strong relationships with their colleagues, build trust, and communicate openly.
By working together, executives can make better decisions and create a culture of accountability, collaboration, and success.
Don't let executive isolation destroy your organisation's potential. Invest in building a team that communicates freely and works together to achieve shared goals.
By doing so, you'll create a positive work culture that values collaboration and empowers its employees.

How One Executive Overcame Isolation from Colleagues and Found Success

April 7, 2023 by Colin Gautrey

Isolation from colleagues can be a fatal trap for executives, but it doesn't have to be a one-way road to failure.

One executive's story demonstrates this point. By failing to build relationships with his colleagues, he found himself cut off from valuable feedback and opportunities to collaborate. This led to poor decision-making, a lack of trust with his team, and a sense of isolation.

However, he was able to turn his situation around by taking action. He built stronger relationships with his colleagues, fostered a culture of openness, and sought out diverse perspectives. By doing so, he was able to make more informed decisions and gain the trust of his team. In the end, he was able to recover and achieve success.

As an executive, it's crucial to recognise the dangers of isolation and take action to prevent it. Connect with your colleagues, communicate openly, and seek out diverse perspectives. Don't let isolation be your downfall. With the right approach, you can overcome it and achieve your goals.

Intractable Problems

March 10, 2023 by Colin Gautrey

When facing an intractable high-consequence problem, your biggest enemy is yourself.

Human nature being what it is, most mere mortals worry their problems into a state that makes them even more difficult to resolve.

Stress builds further and the mind wanders to all the bad things that could happen.

The inevitable delays add more weight to the problem, and more stress and health begins to suffer.

A perfect storm.

So, how do you break out of this vicious cycle?

We all have our own ways, what gets me moving more positively is three simple steps.

  1. Write it down. Lay the problem out as simply as possible and attempt to document your ideal outcome.
  2. Forget about it. Go for a walk, get out in nature, enjoy the company of others. Really good to distress and relax. Resets the mind to adopt a positive attitude and opens it up to fresh thinking.
  3. Return to the problem with a positive mindset, confident that you will find a way to achieve your ideal solution, and fast.

Oh, and when you do return to the problem, keep your emotions out of it.

Engage your head (with positive expectations) not your heart. Save the emotions for after you’ve decided what to do.

For me, this frees up my thinking and puts me in a far more resourceful state.

Generally this allows me to find novel ideas and see different perspectives. And the solutions and decisions in hot pursuit!

Don’t suffer a complex problem, set yourself up for success instead.

Gaining Visibility

March 7, 2023 by Colin Gautrey

Simple idea to apply if you want to get more attention from powerful people.

Discover where they are looking right now. Network and learn about the challenges and problems they are grappling with today.

This is where the majority of their attention will be.

Then go stand in their line of sight and wave something interesting in their face.

That means, something you have, or can do, that will help them - with their top priorities.

Naturally, you’ll need to quickly back this up with credibility and skill, but I’m sure you already have oodles of that.

This is must easier than trying to distract their attention to get noticed. They are not interested in you when they have problems to solve.

So go on, get creative, step into the limelight, and add much needed value to these powerful people.

A New Day

March 6, 2023 by Colin Gautrey

One of the great things about life is that each day is a wonderful opportunity for a new beginning.

Whatever happened yesterday, happened yesterday, not today. Sure, you may have some legacy to deal with, but the events have happened.

Normal people carry those events with them into each new day, spoiling it with the troubles of the past. Reliving old dramas, perpetuating anger and frustration.

Extraordinary people have learned to quickly analyse those events, draw some learning from them, and then move onwards and upwards.

Rather than be shaped by the past events in our lives, each day gives us an opportunity to create afresh. Making different decisions, setting new goals, taking different actions - and choosing to adopt attitudes to suit.

It’s not what happens to us that matters, it’s what we make of it that really shapes our lives.

No matter how bad things have been, today you can choose to have a new day rather than relive an old day.

What sort of day are you determined to have today?

Healthy Respect

March 3, 2023 by Colin Gautrey

I wonder, if you respect someone - maybe a colleague or a stakeholder - why? What is it about that that causes you to respect them?

It's worth pausing a few moments and thinking about a few people you respect in your life. Why do you respect them? The way you award respect can make a massive difference to the quality of your relationships.

Most people tend to answer that they respect the other person’s knowledge, expertise, skill or whatever. They may even respect them because of the way they treat others, or their direct and honest way of communicating.

That is all well and good, except, there is a problem. Read More
