Making Sense of Political Upheaval

December 8, 2016 by Colin Gautrey

At times the power games and political manoeuvring appear undecipherable. An implicit feature of politics is that of imperfect information — not many know what is really going on. And the actors often relish and encourage that. Mere mortals should keep out of the way, unless they serve as useful and expendable pawns. In this article, I'm going to expand on a previous article (Understanding Your Reputational Context) and up the ante by sharing with you a process whereby you can apply Scenario Planning to deepen your insight and hopefully, foresight. Exceptional Influential Leaders

June 21, 2014 by Colin Gautrey

At the beginning of this series of articles, I set out to provoke your thinking and stretch your action towards becoming a more influential leader. My final act in this episode of your learning and development is to share with you some personal thoughts about what I believe it takes to become exceptional. The previous article (Are You an Influential Leader?) outlined the make-up of someone who I believe to be good. Now, in closing, I'm going to raise the bar. I hope you will too. Below you will find my basic criteria. All of these need to be met convincingly for me to recognise someone as an influential leader. I have no doubt that you Read More

Adopting a campaign approach will help you to step up from tactical influencing into the realms of the strategist or, dare I say it, the politician. By doing this, you will achieve far greater influence and get others doing the influencing for you. It will take less time and less effort to get the result. In order to do this, you have to put a serious amount of time into considering seven key aspects of political campaign planning, suitably adapted Read More

Strategic Direction Setting

May 16, 2014 by Colin Gautrey

Exploring your environment is very important when it comes to being successful. However, that can only get you so far. Assuming you have been applying yourself to this endeavour, by now you will have learned a great deal that will help you to work out the context and climate in which you are operating. Now, I want to bring you back to your purpose — becoming an influential leader. Implied in this is that you know what you want to influence in your arena. Earlier, in Influence Processes and Goals, I suggested a process to follow when you are clear about your influencing goals. Now it is time to stretch this into a bigger Read More
